A Cooking Stone is a tool for fully cooking and or finishing and serving meat, bread, or pizza, foods that benefit from its dense thermal mass and temperature inertia. This temperature momentum radiates heat evenly, allowing you to sear thick cuts of meat or evenly crisp your pizza dough.
Cooking Stones are honed to a smooth finish, enabling rapid heat conductivity from stone to food. After reaching temperature the Cooking Stone will become non-stick. However when baking, first add flour or corn meal to the stone to prevent residual moisture from the dough from sticking.
Marinades and sauces will concentrate their flavors and sugars will caramelize. Meats will sear with a brown crust, and a chicken marinade of yogurt and dill is a personal favorite. Unlike on a traditional grill, your cooking stone will prevent flare-ups that lose sauce or light your food on fire.
The natural stone surface is tested for dangerous mineral contaminants and protects your foods from potentially dangerous grill grate metals like lead.
Shop for Cooking Stones →Some of my cooking stones come with a handle. The ½” thickness reaches temperature quicker, and the thicker stone maintains final temperature longer, especially after being removed from the grill.
Other of my cooking stones are made and used without a handle. They are slightly thinner to reach their final temperature quicker.

The Cooking Stone is made from 100% resin-free igneous rock crystals. American Stonecraft starts with natural volcanic rocks in their natural form.
The stones are ground with wet diamond tooling, shaped to size, and drilled with diamond tools to create the receiving holes.
Natural stone features low embodied energy, making it suitable for environmentally conscious chefs. Unlike man-made ceramic “stone” commonly found in kitchens, this is an actual crystallized liquid stone created at much higher temperatures in nature.
A cooking stone is a fun tool that touched on human evolution. Along with salt preservation of meat, cooking meat on stones allowed humans to eat food at a wider window from when it was hunted.

Every American Stonecraft® cooking stone – whether it’s a stone coking stone, coaster, engraved wedding gift,, or sculptural coaster set – is meticulously handcrafted by me, Gerald, using techniques that have taken over a decade to master. I even made this website to tell you about my stonework!
I carefully select the perfect igneous stones for making cooking stones as durable as possible. I even test them with a geiger counter to ensure they do not have any harmful properties.
I cut each offering precisely with diamond tools and under water.
The surface is meticulously diamond polished to a food-safe finish that is easy to scrape clean of cooking residue.
If appropriate for the cooking stone, I add accessories that I also make in house, such as a stainless steel handle and wooden blocks that insulate the stones temperature from your tabletop.
Every coaster is individually made and inspired by hand.
