      OUR  STORY

New England’s first battle, long before Paul Revere’s midnight ride to Concord, MA, was a battle with the soil itself.
Yes, soil. By 1875, a time before the railroad opened up the west, farmers were feeding massive East Coast cities. Ox drawn plows would strike rocks, lodged in the topsoil in the last ice age. Stones were moved aside to the edges of fields. The next year, more rocks rose, and the walls bordering fields grew taller. Again and again stones grew. Farmers felt cursed, but instead, a difference in density between the rocks and the soil and the freezing action of the winter causes the stones to become buoyant, even today. Hundreds of thousands of miles of these stonewalls were eventually constructed in New England. They were left behind as family farms moved westward. Now, these archaeological ruins still line the countryside, often amidst trees that have sprouted up around fallow farmland. American Stonecraft is a Benefit Corporation based in Lowell and Boston Massachusetts that employs diamonds, water, and electricity to grind through rocks to make really cool art. We make products like Food and Cook Slabs, Coasters, Trivets, Bowlders, and Furniture, even offer our lineup of products from customer sourced boulders.
American Stonecraft partners with 72 working farms across New England to bring them value-added goods at no additional cost. We personally train and support each farmer to source exotic specimens worth hundreds of dollars each. Goods are finished in Lowell, MA and the workshop is open for tours M-F. Or visit us at our store inside the Boston Public Market 7 days a week.

      OUR  CRAFT

No two are alike, each a work of art and a slice of nature. Live edges, organic shapes; just as the glaciers left them. Our team of artisans (guys and girls alike) use custom-made diamond hand tools to slice, sculpt, hone and polish our farm gathered fieldstones, revealing more of their natural beauty. Slabs and Bowlders are food-safe. Coasters are absorbent. Trivets are stain resistant. Local stones, hand gathered and handcrafted in small batches; even paying tribute to its farmer.

      FOUNDED

American Stonecraft was founded in 2012 by Gerald Croteau III, a Washington DC economist who later moved to the United Arab Emirates to sell condos to real estate investors. On a trip to the states he saw a fieldstone cut open and knew his New England history and recognized a cool story. He spent years perfecting his craft, designing tools and techniques, and still supervises the workshop today. As an economist, he is passionate about using business as a source for positive social change. To preserve the studio’s mission permanently, the company filed as a Benefit Corporation in 2016.
